Dancing the Tinikling

Clap-Tap-Tap! Clap-Tap-Tap!
Dancing the tinikling looks easy (and fun!) but this hopping, waltzing Filipino dance is harder than it seems. Is Jojo up to the challenge?

A tikling (notice the missing “i”) is a small bird. The tinikling dance is meant
to imitate the bird’s grace, speed and agility.

Abacá Ball Craft

The abacá (pronounced a-buh-KAH) plant is similar to the banana plant It is found in the Philippines and is used to make ship rope, fabric and for decorations and crafts.

Materials
Balloon, Glue, Mixing Bowl, Raffia Ribbon*, Scissors, Water

  1. Cover your work surface!

  2. Create a mixture of equal parts water and glue.

  3. Blow up a balloon to the size of a small cantaloupe and tie off.

  4. Unravel the raffia ribbon and dip it into the glue mixture to soak it.

  5. Wrap the raffia around the balloon several times in all directions. Lie the raffia as flat as possible on the surface of the ballon.

  6. When you are happy with the pattern on the balloon, cut the raffia and lie the loose end flat. It will be sticky and should stay in place.

  7. Cut a piece of raffia ribbon about one foot long and tie around the knot of the balloon. Hang the raffia-wrapped balloon to dry. BE SURE TO PLACE SOMETHING UNDERNEATH THE BALLOON TO CATCH THE DRIPPING GLUE MIXTURE!

  8. Once the glue is completely dry (waiting overnight is a good idea!), ask a grown-up to help you pop the ballon.

  9. Carefully remove the ballon from inside the dried and hardened raffia and use as a toy or for decoration!

*We are using raffia ribbon for this project instead of actual abaca which is quite expensive!
