Stained Glass Tuba Craft

I love including instruments in Music Library boxes and for that reason, I almost passed over The Oboe Goes Boom Boom Boom because I can’t exactly ship every subscriber an oboe. Well, I suppose I could but that would make the cost of the box a tad bit pricey! Things didn’t look any more favorable after reading the story and discovering that the indomitable Felicity doesn’t choose to play the oboe OR the drums, but instead opts for [SPOILER ALERT!] the tuba.

tuba, whomp whomp, tuba sounds, music onomatopoeia,

A TUBA?!

How in the world do we include a tuba in a 12x10 box?!

With a craft, of course! I discovered a great little company that just so happened to make custom wooden musical instruments-including tubas! So with a little brainstorming (and some trial-and-error), I created a little activity using an easy and popular technique (decoupage) that give learners a fun and unique way to explore the parts of a tuba!

Let’s get started.

First you’ll need these materials:

  • Wooden tuba

  • Tissue paper

  • Mod Podge

  • Foam brush

  • String

  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge onto one side of the wooden tuba.

  2. Carefully place one layer of tissue paper on top, smoothing out any wrinkles.

  3. Flip the project over and apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the other side of the tuba. Cover with another piece of tissue paper.

  4. Let dry.

  5. Carefully cut away the extra tissue paper leaving a small border.

  6. Apply another layer of Mod Podge to one side, gluing down the excess border as you go. When that side has dried, apply a second layer to the second side.

  7. Once dry, tie the string to the mouthpiece of the tuba and hang in a sunny window!

I love that it turned out looking kind of like an x-ray, almost like you are looking at the inner-workings of the instrument.

My oldest said it would make a great Christmas tree ornament and my eyes immediately became wide with excitement as I envisioned a tree full of music instrument ornaments. I’m not usually one for themed Christmas trees
but for these I just might make an exception!
